GEO vs SEO vs AEO: What Should a Business Buy?

giteroute Philippines · Explainer

Start with the business problem

These labels describe overlapping approaches to discovery and information quality. SEO concerns visibility in search engines. AEO emphasizes clear answers to questions. GEO concerns how information and businesses are represented in generative answers. Agencies do not all use these terms identically, so the deliverables matter more than the label.

SEO: make relevant pages discoverable and useful

For a service business, SEO can include technical accessibility, sensible site structure, clear service pages, and content aligned with customer intent. A page that search engines cannot reach, or that leaves a buyer unable to understand the service, needs foundational work regardless of which acronym appears on the proposal.

AEO: make the important answers explicit

AEO work can identify questions that affect a purchase and improve the way they are answered. Examples include service inclusions, prerequisites, price factors, location arrangements, and how to evaluate a provider. The answer should be part of useful visible content, not hidden markup or a generic FAQ block added to every page.

GEO: examine representation in generative answers

A GEO-focused scope can add a fixed question set, business-identity checks, evidence preparation, and observations of AI answers and citations. The observations should record their context. They are samples from specific runs, not a stable nationwide ranking or proof that a model has permanently learned a preferred recommendation.

What remains shared

Clear business information, useful content, accessible pages, and credible evidence support all three approaches. Google’s guidance for AI features explicitly retains its established SEO foundations and does not require special AI-specific markup. Buying three packages should not mean paying three times for the same technical fixes or the same service-page rewrite.

A practical decision framework

A website with technical access problems should address those first. A website that is accessible but vague about its services may need stronger content and answers. A business with clear pages can then investigate inconsistent AI descriptions, missing evidence, and the questions that matter in a purchase. This sequencing is a planning recommendation, not a universal ranking formula.

Ask for a combined work map

Ask an agency to connect every task to a business question, a website or evidence asset, and an acceptance test. The map should show dependencies and prevent duplicate work. Separate reporting for search visits, answer observations, and qualified enquiries makes it easier to understand which changes are actually visible.

What to bring to a scope discussion

Prepare the website, priority services, real operating locations, current reports, and examples of customer questions. Those inputs support a more useful discussion than choosing a package because it includes the largest number of acronyms.

Start with your business question

Share your website, priority products or services, customer questions and actual service areas where relevant. Scope, timing and fees are agreed directly.
