ChatGPT Ads Targeting Options: Context Hints, Locations and Platforms

What targeting controls are documented today?

ChatGPT Ads targeting is not simply a list of exact-match keywords. OpenAI’s current Help Center describes campaign-level country and platform selections, location controls that vary by account and campaign type, optional custom-audience controls for eligible cases, and ad-group context hints. The options available in a specific account are the source of truth because the platform is changing during beta.

Context hints guide relevance; they are not keywords

OpenAI says context hints help its systems understand when an ad may be relevant. They should describe the product or service, who it helps or when it may be useful. OpenAI explicitly says these hints are not exact-match keywords or targeting rules and do not guarantee delivery for particular conversations or audiences.

A useful hint therefore adds accurate context rather than repeating a search phrase. For example, a provider might describe a real product category, intended use and material eligibility limit. It should not include unsupported claims, sensitive personal information or assumptions about a user’s private conversation.

Locations and platforms

Campaigns can include countries, and the setup guide documents additional location options such as regions, cities, markets or postal codes where available. Availability can vary. OpenAI also warns that some new self-service accounts may initially advertise only in the account’s home country; selecting another location does not override that account restriction. The account must meet OpenAI’s verification and spend requirements for broader supported-country eligibility.

The current guide lists optional platform selections for Android app, Android web, desktop web, iOS app and iOS web. Confirm the exact controls shown for your campaign instead of assuming every combination is available.

Build a responsible test

  1. Start with the service area and customer use case the advertiser can actually serve.

  2. Use separate ad groups only when the customer need, message or landing page is meaningfully different.

  3. Write context hints as factual descriptions of relevance, not as promises about who will see an ad.

  4. Choose a location the advertiser can lawfully and operationally serve, then confirm it appears as eligible in Ads Manager.

  5. Review the ad and destination for policy alignment before testing.

  6. Compare the same date range and account timezone when reviewing delivery, clicks, spend and conversions.

giteroute can help turn the advertiser’s offer and customer questions into a testable campaign structure, while coordinating the destination page with GEO and supporting SEO work. This is a planning and management capability, not access to hidden targeting controls or guaranteed exposure. Paid placement and organic AI answers remain separate.
